The film deals loosely with the adventures of the grizzled Gustav who captains a ship – a giant floating ‘snailboat’ – with a crew of talking animals and lumbering sailors in blackface. It unspools like a perverse children’s story book, all at once cuddly cute, grotesquely obscene and beyond absurd as normal narrative logic shatters, giving way to an episodic, free-associative structure that one critic likened to “cinematic memory association.” (joergbuttgereit.com)

This adaptation of Goethe's old German folk story, tells about a wily fox who manages to outwit the court of King Lion and the rest of the animal kingdom. He is finally made Prime Minister, on the theory that if you can’t beat them, have them join you. In the finest tradition of political aspirants, Fox uses every dirty trick in the book to attain his position. He’s a name caller, a tail puller, a fiend. Although the animation was finished in Paris after an 18-month period (1929-1930), there were problems with adding a soundtrack. Finally, funding was given for a soundtrack by the German National Socialist regime and this version had its premiere in Berlin in 1937. Starewicz’s masterly puppet animation was arguably the worlds 1st animated feature, preceding Disney’s Snow White by 7 years. The Tale Of The Fox was thought lost until archivists rediscovered an old print in the early 80s. Now is completely restored, including a new orchestral backing to the original Vincent Scotto score.

Film is loosely based on Petronius's work, Satyricon, a series of bawdy and satirical episodes written during the reign of the emperor Nero and set in imperial Rome. Fellini's project saw competition from another film titled Satyricon, released the same year. Producer Alfredo Bini had registered the Satyricon title in 1962. When Fellini and his producer Alberto Grimaldi started work on their film, Bini contracted Gian Luigi Polidoro to direct his own version. Grimaldi sued Bini to halt the competing film, but lost; as a result, Fellini's picture was titled "Fellini - Satyricon" to distinguish it. (From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia)

Beautifully constructed, 1001 Nights stays true to the lush and mysterious backdrop of the well known and age old story. Tezuka remolds the story into an escapist fantasy where a 60s-era working man is transported back to an era of entirely fictitious Arabian details. Seemingly at odds with itself, 1001 Nights consistently unfolds in a way that combines Playboy graphics, Arabian rug design and traditional Japanese scroll paintings. Sound like a strange mix? You bet and along the way we experience some of the great cultural juxtapositions that makes Tezuka the unpredictable style it is. Source: MAL
