Aboard the Alabama, Tommy meets up with Smoky (Bud Abbott) and Pomeroy (Lou Costello), who help hide him from Dorothy, who hatches numerous schemes in an attempt to photograph Tommy/Russ being a sailor. Beating Preston Sturgesâs Hail the Conquering Hero to the punch by about nine years, this is the rare political satire thatâs more transcendent than mean (the New York Times noted it was âpardonable but definitely incorrect of you to assume from this that the new film is an attack on the intelligence of the Pennsylvania electorateâ), and Dick Powell is at his pre-noir best.
