Seijun Suzuki directed this great-looking adventure set in early 1900s Tokyo. Akira Kobayashi stars as a coal-miner who leads a rebellion against a nasty tyrant. Tamio Kawaji stands out in a flamboyantly villainous turn in a cast including Chieko Matsubara and Osamu Takizawa. The impressive set design by Itsuo Kimura and above-average production values make this one of the more enjoyable films to come out of Nikkatsu Studios at the time, even if Suzuki's normally distinctive style seems somewhat muted by the traditional storyline.
The Human Condition is a Japanese epic film trilogy made between 1959 and 1961. The trilogy follows the life of Kaji, a Japanese pacifist and socialist, as he tries to survive in the fascist and oppressive world of WWII-era Japan. No Greater Love (1959) opens with Kaji marrying his sweetheart Michiko despite his misgivings about the future.

Completed before his immensely successful Maria Candelaria, Emilio Fernandez' Flor Sylvestre was released second in the US-and not until two years after its initial Mexican release. The lion's share of the footage, however, is devoted to the romance between Esperanza (Dolores Del Rio), granddaughter of a common laborer, and Jose Luis Castro (Pedro Armendariz), the firebrand son of a landowner. Later on, Castro's father is killed by outlaws; in seeking vengeance, he sacrifices his own life, while Esperanza carries on his revolutionary work with their young son in tow.

The title "All My Good Countrymen" is not without irony as this epic tale of Czech village life from shortly after the end of the Second World War concentrates on the activities of a group of friends who are not beyond reproach in siding with a politically corrupt regime for material advancement. Are these the "good countrymen" of the title or does it refer to the rest of the village who scorn these petty authority figure with silent contempt?
